Reading automaticity is fast, automatic, and effortless reading at the word level. When automaticity skills are high, the reader doesn't have to spend any cognitive resources sounding out words. Attractive word targets to establish automaticity are the words that are used most frequently. Dr. Edward B. Fry's "Fry Words" are the most common words in written text in order, and are an updated version of the "Dolch Words". In fact, Fry's First 100 words make up 50% of written text! Establishing automaticity requires practice and repetition, which makes drill-play an attractive approach. When the words are automatic, they should also be practiced in meaningful phrase and sentence work.
