Only practicing your sounds during speech is like only doing pushups 1x a week and expecting bodybuilder muscles. It takes time to retrain our brains and mouths! Grab your speech bin and these products and practice practice practice.
1. Time Timer
Set the timer visually! Also helpful for all parts of daily routines. Also available as an app for on-the-go.
2. Auditory Feedback "Phone"
Makes it easier (& much more fun!) to hear the sound we are working on. Great for reading too!
3. Travel Mirror with Light
Sometimes it's helpful to look where our tongue, lips, and teeth are when we make our sound. I tell my clients to put a mirror in the car for built in practice on the go. The light on this mirror is great (and enticing for kiddos) but any $5 mirror from Target will do the trick.
4. Abacus for counting trials
How many times do you have to say your sound in speech class? 100. Guess how many beads are on this abacus.... 100! As you practice your homework, keep track of how many times you say each sound. Can you fill out the whole abacus before you see your speech teacher again?
5. A tiny mouth
I LOVE using my giant mouth to make the invisible tongue visible. Try this tiny mouth with a play-doh tongue! Talk about where the tongue needs to go to make your sound. Are your lips fishy or smiley?
